Saturn Flextreme First Shown: 2008 Detroit Auto Show Description: Plug-in crossbreed compact auto Sales Pitch:”Flextreme reveals that non-traditional thinking can lead to excellent cars.”Much More Forgotten Concepts Saturn Flextreme Information: First seen at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show, the Saturn Flextreme Concept was a digital clone of the Opel Flextreme

Concept which had actually been revealed

at the 2007 Frankfort Auto

Show only a few weeks earlier. The Flextreme idea was a 4-door compact car including a plug-in serial-hybrid drivetrain comparable to that introduced in the Chevrolet Volt Concept introduced at the Detroit Show a year previously. Unlike the Volt Concept, which featured a small gasoline engine, the Flextreme was powered by a little 1.3-liter diesel. When totally charged, the Flextreme was claimed to travel as much as 34 miles on electrical power

alone, after which the diesel motor took over. Saturn declared a combined electric/diesel range of 444 miles. The Flextreme featured center-opening side doors which, when opened together, developed a usefully huge flow to the vehicle’s inside. As opposed to a rear hatch, the Flextreme incorporated a pair of gullwing-style doors situated on the car’s rear bodyside. For city travelers, a pair of Segway Personal Transporters were kept under the vehicle’s freight area and also can be accessed from outside of the car. No word on if the Segway batteries were charged while in storage under the auto.

Forgotten Concept: Briggs & Stratton Hybrid Saturn Flextreme CG Says: The Chevrolet Volt Concept was introduced to much excitement back in 2007, yet the buzz might have come mostly from the car press, which appeared to understand the E-Flex plug-in hybrid system far better than the general public. When the manufacturing Volt arrived for 2011, public feedback was warm at best, as General Motors took care of public and media skepticism, especially that from Fox News. Because of this,

Volt variations like the Opel and Saturn Flextreme never ever developed into full manufacturing designs. Sadly, the E-Flex principle– which is differ just like Nissan’s e-Power system– never ever saw life beyond the Volt, unless you count the temporary, as well as incredibly unusual, Cadillac ELR

Old English In America: A Jaguar XJ6 With Attitude

    <!–

Old English In America: A Jaguar XJ6 With Attitude

A 1970s Jaguar screams affluence, but cars like the one I’m about to show you can now be picked up for a song. That fact grants endless possibilities for customization, even on a modest budget.

It’s not unheard of to find a ’70s or ’80s XJ for under a grand here in the US, but of course, any car that cheap will be in need of work. With some patience though, these older Jags can be a great platform for a unique build. Jacob Kravitz’ series one 1972 XJ6, AKA ‘Old English‘ is proof of that.

    Jaguar-623

Jacob’s Jaguar, a project he is completing with his dad, is very much a work in progress. But the goal has always been the same: to continually evolve the XJ6 until it’s the cleanest home garage-built car it can be.

    Jaguar-304

That will take however long it takes, because there are no plans to ever sell it. There are already numerous neat details though, arguably the biggest of which is what’s now living under the XJ6’s long hood.

    Jaguar-383

These cars came with XK straight-six engines from factory, but this Jag now beats to the sound of an American drum – a small block Chevy-shaped one.

    Jaguar-433

Jacob and his dad pulled this particular 350ci V8 from an ’85 Chevy truck, and it’s not only breathed new performance into the old Jag, but improved its reliability too. Then there’s the heartbeat – have a listen here.

    Jaguar-254
    Jaguar-224

Outside, the body remains original – right down to most of the 50-year-old paint – but it looks a whole lot tougher thanks to a suspension drop and a set of Pontiac Trans Am mesh wheels. Spacers are used to get the latter sitting just right.

    Jaguar-1513

Halo headlights are a polarizing modification, and I’m usually not a big fan. But something about the juxtaposition of vintage and modern together got me with this one.

    Jaguar-183

Inside, a pair of custom-trimmed BMW E30 seats have been adapted to fit, and Jacob has also now built a custom dashboard with modern gauges.

    Jaguar-643
    Jaguar-234

‘Old English’ is truly a generational build featuring cues from both of its crafter’s eras. It’s also mixing old and new, and stately British and American muscle car aspects. That’s pretty cool.

Physically, the Avenger is greater than 6 inches shorter overall than the currently small Renegade. Despite its front-drive layout, it will certainly still have virtually 8 inches of ground clearance and also provide the chauffeur with 6 selectable drive settings, consisting of setups for mud, sand, as well as snow. Classic Car Ads: Cars of 1912

    1912 Haynes

Fun thing to think about: 1912 was Chevrolet’s first full year on the market. Now, 111 years later, Chevrolet is still around, but most of the brands seen below are not. It’s odd to think that this gallery is filled with the cars that Chevrolet buyers in 1912 either passed on, or simply could not afford.

    Michigan Auto Ad

Excerpt from Michigan ad seen below.

Take special note of the Michigan ad. Until I read this particular advertisement, I was not aware that cars were lumped into categories based on horsepower. Or, maybe they weren’t. The auto industry was still evolving, and comparisons between brands were often difficult to make, as many of these cars were sold regionally, and could not be easily had in every market.

And, reviewing the ads below, it occurs to be that Detroit Electric would make a fine brand to bring back into action.

This Three Wide Locomotive Drag Race From Finland Is Way Cooler Than You Are Expecting

This Three Wide Locomotive Drag Race From Finland Is Way Cooler Than You Are Expecting

If you are a big time steam freak or someone who is into locomotives and have known about hi-jinx like this for years, forgive us. We never knew that locomotives were drag raced! In this video (which we believe is from Finland) we see three engines that are unencumbered aside from their fuel tenders let loose in a three wide fashion on sets of parallel tracks. The three behemoths actually get their roll on pretty hard and that may be the thing we dug about this video the most.

When you think of a steam train accelerating the obvious place your brain goes is to the slow cadence of chuffing steam that eventually increases until the engine is running down the track. Remember that the laboring and slow accelerating comes largely from the fact that there are hundred or thousands of tons of cars behind the engine in those cases. In this video? Nothing but a coal or wood tender to keep the firebox hot and the steam blazing. We chopped off the early part of the video which was a bunch of yelling in Finnish and trains sitting there. All we have below is the action, now.

These things bring a whole new meaning to the term “rolling coal” because when their throttles are pushed wide open, two out of the three locomotives unleash a near volcanic cloud of soot. We’re not sure if they tore down the train that won looking for nitrous or other illegal power adders but it certainly lays a whoopin’ on the other two. Big smoke, big steam, big torque, and big pressure. Here’s some locomotive drag racing!

Press play to see the first locomotive drag race we have ever seen!
