Big Cat Prowling: This 9.50-capable 1971 Mercury Cougar Is What Luxury Sport Should Look Like

Big Cat Prowling: This 9.50-capable 1971 Mercury Cougar Is What Luxury Sport Should Look Like

Between 1967-1973, the Mercury Cougar was the luxurious answer for someone who liked the performance of the Ford Mustang but wanted to have more luxuries at their disposal. While it’s never been completely easy to link the two together since the Cougar enjoyed a longer wheelbase and seriously different sheet metal than the Mustang, the first generation (1967-1970) laid no doubts that it was a gentleman’s performance machine. However, with the 1971 restyle, it became apparent that the Cougar was quickly trading the “sport” side for the “personal luxury” position. The new car was bigger and much more formal, even though underneath it was still all Mustang. The 1971 Cougar did come with some power left under hood in the form of the 429 Cobra Jet, but compared to this lovely beast, even the big CJ motor would pale in comparison. The Hedger Bros. “Cat On The Prowl” Cougar has been in race trim since 1979 and has over 4,000 passes on it. That lovely growl you’re hearing is courtesy of a iron-headed 460-based powertrain that’s sitting at 472ci, and it will shove the 3,000lb Mercury to a 9.50 quarter mile, bronze paint, vinyl roof and all.

We HAVE OIL PRESSURE! The Record Setting Gen V LT Motion Raceworks Nova Is Back In Action!

We HAVE OIL PRESSURE! The Record Setting Gen V LT Motion Raceworks Nova Is Back In Action!

Well…… it turns out the problem with Doug Cook’s Motion Raceworks Nova may not have been what was originally thought. You’ll remember that this 7 second machine made huge power on the dyno just days before Rocky Mountain Race Week and then on day one of Race Week has an oil leak that made them look at the oil tank, which then made them find metal in the oil. Like smart people they decided that it was time to pull the plug and not ruin this expensive engine. Instead they raced Wally, the awesome FB Marketplace purchased Crown Vic that got copious amounts of Nitrous all week. When they got home the engine came out of the Nova, got sent to the machine shop, and that’s when things get…well…confusing? Well maybe not confusing. Curious? Interesting? Puzzling?

Or maybe it’s lucky. Either way, the engine is back from the machine shop, Doug and the gang are getting ready to put it back in, and they are taking all of us on the whole fun adventure to show just what is going into the beast before it has to get some testing done so it can leave on Rocky Mountain Race Week 2020 2.0 in a few weeks.

Watch the video, hang with the crew, and Doug will attempt to explain just what went wrong and how they fixed it.

The Colonial Classic Bracket Race Is LIVE From Virginia Motorsports Park!

The Colonial Classic Bracket Race Is LIVE From Virginia Motorsports Park!

The crew at Virginia Motorsports Park is one of the best in the business, and they were fully set for this weekend’s 7th Annual Colonial Classic, when the rain came. Friday was a wash out as the the water got under the rubber and required a complete track scrape to the 1/8th mile mark before reprepping could begin. Plus more rain was coming Friday early evening. But it is Saturday now, the track crew has tirelessly worked to get this surface into full bitchin mode, and racing is scheduled to start this morning! Friday’s purse will carry over to today so that means the money is going to be even bigger for Saturday nights champion!

This is another Loose Rocker Promotions event, which everyone who attends love, so we’re sure that with their expertise and the unbeatable track crew at VMP, that they will make this weekend great. And who wouldn’t think it was great if they are taking home the win and at least $10,000? That isn’t too shabby, that’s for sure. With the year we have had so far, just getting out and racing is something to be proud of and the crew in Virginia has been diligently working with health officials and local, state, and federal agencies to do everything they can to make the racing environment safe and fun for the racers and fans. We commend them on these efforts as we know they are NOT easy.

So grab a snack, a beverage, and your screen because the racing is scheduled to start any minute!

The Green Light: WebMD Highlights Paul Lee’s Journey Back To Driving A Funny Car After A Heart Attack.

The Green Light: WebMD Highlights Paul Lee’s Journey Back To Driving A Funny Car After A Heart Attack.

When our friend, and owner of McLeod and FTI, Paul Lee had his heart attack back in 2016 the NHRA Drag Racing community was shocked. Paul was one of these in-shape guys that you never expected to have a massive heart attack. When it became clear that this heart attack caused major, life changing, damage, Paul went into get back to living mode. That meant massive amounts of physical therapy, conditioning, and more, but with the understanding that none of it would ever allow him to race a Nitro burning hot rod again. His racing career was over, after years of working to get to the very spot he was in right before the heart attack.

He had just signed a deal to race a third Kalitta Motorsports Funny Car and was looking forward to his career in racing moving onward and upward. And then the heart attack took that all away.

We talked to him multiple times afterwards, and can tell you that his attitude toward life and business and growth was amazing, even though he had a very real and apparent disappointment in never getting behind the wheel again. Most people would not have handled it so well.

Imagine his surprise though, when the doctors said his recovery was so good maybe he could make a hit in the race car again! Well that was all he needed to start pushing harder and working with medical staff to see if that could become a genuine reality. Watch this great short film from WebMD to see the journey and learn the story. It’s pretty awesome.

Back On The Buick: Here’s A Lost Episode Of The Hagerty Straight Eight Redline Rebuild Series

Back On The Buick: Here’s A Lost Episode Of The Hagerty Straight Eight Redline Rebuild Series

We’ve been jonesing for an update on the Hagerty Buick Straight Eight Redline Rebuild project from Hagerty of late. With the whole social distancing and other junk it’s stopped a lot of these projects in their tracks. Thankfully there was some footage that had been overlooked and has not been found. This episode takes us back to the machine shop and shows a few interesting things regarding the cylinder head  that is going back on the engine.

Between the CC work that is done, the porting and polishing, and other touching that’s handled on the head, the different in volume is interesting. There’s actually some CC volume to be made back with a fresh set of modern valves as the factory ones have a huge dish in them and actually add a fairly large amount of volume to the chamber.

This is neat stuff as we have never messed with an inline eight. Having not been down this road before we get the feeling that we learn something from every one of the series videos. This engine has been a toughie since the start of the project but the progress, while slow, is being made.

The head looks at lot better at the end than at the start. Sporty!
